SUMMARY:Percussive Dance Workshop with Music from the Sole
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special Afro-Brazilian and percussive dance community engagement event with Music from the Sole on Monday\, February 5 at 7:30 PM at Dance Place in Brookland\, Washington DC! \nAhead of their performance at The Clarice on Thursday\, February 8\, Music from the Sole company members will offer a rhythm-focused movement workshop for DC’s capoeira and percussive dance communities. They will work with participants to explore Afro-Brazilian rhythms in samba\, capoeira\, Brazilian funk\, jazz\, and more through body movement and percussion. Don’t miss this exciting opportunity for cultural exchange with Brazilian movement and rhythm specialists! \nA co-presentation of The Clarice and EducArte\, the community workshop takes place on Monday\, February 5 at 7:30 p.m. at Dance Place’s Edgewood Arts Center at 3415 8th Street NE\, Washington\, DC\, 20017. \nSpace is limited; free registration is required at www.educarteinc.org/tapcap. \nAbout Music from the Sole\nA tap dance and live music company that blurs the line between concert dance and music performance\, Music From The Sole celebrates tap’s roots in the African diaspora\, particularly its connections to Afro-Brazilian dance and music and its lineage to forms like house dance and passinho (Brazilian funk). The New Yorker notes that the group’s “dancers\, whose bodies also provide percussion\, are in a constant give-and-take with musicians on piano\, sax and bass. The feeling is that of being at a family reunion\, in which every family member has something to say.” \nLed by Brazilian choreographer Leonardo Sandoval and composer Gregory Richardson\, Music from the Sole’s work embraces tap’s unique nature as a blend of sound and movement\, incorporating wide-ranging influences like samba\, passinho\, Afro-Cuban\, jazz and house.

SUMMARY:Festival Style Irish Dance at Celtic Festival of Southern Maryland
DESCRIPTION:Dancer and scholar Kate Spanos will demonstrate the festival style of Irish dance at the Celtic Festival of Southern Maryland this year. Festival style Irish dance is a form associated with Northern Ireland that is distinct from the “feis” style step dancing that emerged in the mid-twentieth century. The style was pioneered by Patricia Mulholland\, a fiddler and dancer\, who created a “folk ballet” in the 1930-1950s to appeal to both Catholics and Protestants in the Belfast area. Influenced by Scottish and Irish step dancing\, festival style is known for its slow\, elegant\, and controlled slip jigs and set dances. Creating “light and shade” in one’s dancing is an important aspect of the style\, with graceful leg lifts\, swoops\, and spins. Drawing on her studies with Ruth Long and Lauren Smyth in the festival style tradition\, Kate will present a showcase of traditional and modern soft shoe and hard shoe dances in this style.

A master percussionist\, bandleader\, producer\, and songwriter\, Kettner is the guiding force behind Nation Beat\, a band whose teeming\, vibrant rhythms find common ground in the rhythms of Brazil’s northeastern region\, the Big Easy’s funky\, hypnotic Second Line and strolling Mardi Gras Indians\, and the unfettered freedom of big-city downtown jazz. www.scottkettner.com \nAbout the book\n“In his new book\, The Essential Pandeiro Method\, he clearly demonstrates his step-by-step process to developing the fundamental skills needed to play the pandeiro in a highly musical and fluid way. I’ve practiced some of Scott’s methods myself and I highly recommend this book for anyone serious about learning the wonderful art of playing pandeiro.” – Stanton Moore (drummer\, Galactic) \n“Nation Beat leader Scott Kettner is an expert in vibrant cross-cultural fusions” -Time Out New York \n“His drumming seamlessly blends that Louisiana second-line sound with a Brazil-ified backbeat.”-WNYC/NPR Radio
