Join this weekly samba dance class\, which gives students the opportunity to work on their technique and learn exciting new choreographies\, including footwork\, body isolations\, and hip work. This class will prepare you to perform samba with a live music ensemble\, if you choose to.  \nClasses are led by Luy Cortes\, a dynamic Brazilian samba performer\, choreographer\, and instructor with more than fifteen years of professional experience. Luy has graced stages and celebrations across the world\, performing at hundreds of weddings\, corporate galas\, cultural festivals\, parades\, Carnival events\, and community celebrations. As the founder and director of Samba Passion\, Luy has created\, staged\, and taught choreographies for dancers of all levels\, from beginners discovering samba’s rhythms to seasoned performers refining their stage presence. DESCRIPTION:Have you been mesmerized by the energy and cohesion of the carnival street percussion groups of Rio de Janeiro\, Brazil? Join this weekly Brazilian bateria class to learn the fundamentals of samba percussion technique and repertoire. A bateria is the percussion ensemble driving the groove of the whole samba band. \nEducArte’s percussion director and Rio de Janeiro native André Coelho leads the bateria classes. André has played in many carnival groups\, such as Carmelitas\, Céu na Terra\, Cacique de Ramos\, Orquestra Voadora\, Prata Preta\, and Tá Pirando. Classes are also taught by Levine faculty member Christopher Payne\, a multi-faceted drummer and percussionist who fuses ethnic hand percussion\, orchestral percussion\, and drum set to create music across a multitude of genres. \nThe bateria class meets for 1.5 hours a week to work on technique and repertoire and to rehearse for group performances. Through interactive play\, EducArte’s instructors introduce you to capoeira’s dynamic movements\, drumming\, and call-and-response songs\, fostering creativity and cooperation in a fun\, inclusive environment. \nTime and Place\nPerformances will take place at 10am on November 8th and 22nd in the Helen Hayes Gallery of The National Theatre\, located at 1321 Pennsylvania Ave NW\, Washington\, DC 20004. Children will be encouraged to sit on rainbow mats on the floor and parents to sit in chairs behind. \nTickets and Donations\nRegistration is FREE but donations are welcome. In the event of a sellout\, please feel free to join the waitlist; we also accept walk-ups\, pending the availability of space. \nAudience\nThis performance is ideal for children ages 3-6 but all are welcome! \nAccessibility\nThis performance will be ASL-interpreted.
