Join this weekly Brazilian bateria class to learn the fundamentals of samba percussion technique and repertoire. A bateria is the percussion ensemble driving the groove of the whole samba band. \nEducArte’s percussion director and Rio de Janeiro native André Coelho leads the bateria classes. André has played in many carnival groups\, such as Carmelitas\, Céu na Terra\, Cacique de Ramos\, Orquestra Voadora\, Prata Preta\, and Tá Pirando. Classes are also taught by Levine faculty member Christopher Payne\, a multi-faceted drummer and percussionist who fuses ethnic hand percussion\, orchestral percussion\, and drum set to create music across a multitude of genres. \nEducArte at Levine welcomes all levels\, from beginners to advanced\, semi-professionals\, and music teachers. Samba is an interactive experience and we invite you to join the sarau de samba. \nSet in the historic Glen Echo Park\, Sarau de Samba features a dynamic ensemble of skilled musicians and dancers\, showcasing the diverse rhythms of samba\, from Golden Age classics and choro to modern pagode and high-energy carnival beats. DESCRIPTION:Have you been mesmerized by the energy and cohesion of the carnival street percussion groups of Rio de Janeiro\, Brazil? Join this weekly Brazilian bateria class to learn the fundamentals of samba percussion technique and repertoire. A bateria is the percussion ensemble driving the groove of the whole samba band. \nEducArte’s percussion director and Rio de Janeiro native André Coelho leads the bateria classes. André has played in many carnival groups\, such as Carmelitas\, Céu na Terra\, Cacique de Ramos\, Orquestra Voadora\, Prata Preta\, and Tá Pirando. Classes are also taught by Levine faculty member Christopher Payne\, a multi-faceted drummer and percussionist who fuses ethnic hand percussion\, orchestral percussion\, and drum set to create music across a multitude of genres. \nEducArte at Levine welcomes all levels\, from beginners to advanced\, semi-professionals\, and music teachers. No auditions are required. The bateria class meets for 1.5 hours a week to work on technique and repertoire and to rehearse for group performances. The program aims to build students’ self-esteem\, creativity\, and curiosity\, and celebrate ties to their country of origin\, Brazil. \nBrazilian Arts Academy is crafted for students aged 6 to 14 to learn\, retain\, and practice Brazilian Portuguese language through Brazilian music and cultural arts. Students have hands-on experience with Brazilian musical instruments and rhythms and learn culturally relevant songs by esteemed Brazilian composers and songwriters. \nThe class meets weekly on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Round House Theatre in Bethesda (April 18 will be held at the Round House Education Center in Silver Spring). SUMMARY:EducArte at Levine: Brazilian Bateria Samba Drumming Class
DESCRIPTION:Have you been mesmerized by the energy and cohesion of the carnival street percussion groups of Rio de Janeiro\, Brazil? Join this weekly Brazilian bateria class to learn the fundamentals of samba percussion technique and repertoire. A bateria is the percussion ensemble driving the groove of the whole samba band. \nEducArte’s percussion director and Rio de Janeiro native André Coelho leads the bateria classes. André has played in many carnival groups\, such as Carmelitas\, Céu na Terra\, Cacique de Ramos\, Orquestra Voadora\, Prata Preta\, and Tá Pirando. Classes are also taught by Levine faculty member Christopher Payne\, a multi-faceted drummer and percussionist who fuses ethnic hand percussion\, orchestral percussion\, and drum set to create music across a multitude of genres. \nThe bateria class meets for 1.5 hours a week to work on technique and repertoire and to rehearse for group performances. All students will have the opportunity to perform periodically if they choose to. \nEducarte welcomes all levels\, from beginners to advanced\, semi-professionals\, and music teachers. DESCRIPTION:About the Show\nExperience the vibrant Afro-Brazilian tradition of capoeira\, a blend of dance\, music\, acrobatics\, and martial arts! Through interactive play\, EducArte’s instructors introduce you to capoeira’s dynamic movements\, drumming\, and call-and-response songs\, fostering creativity and cooperation in a fun\, inclusive environment. \nTime and Place\nPerformances will take place at 10am on November 8th and 22nd in the Helen Hayes Gallery of The National Theatre\, located at 1321 Pennsylvania Ave NW\, Washington\, DC 20004. Children will be encouraged to sit on rainbow mats on the floor and parents to sit in chairs behind. \nTickets and Donations\nRegistration is FREE but donations are welcome. In the event of a sellout\, please feel free to join the waitlist; we also accept walk-ups\, pending the availability of space. \nAudience\nThis performance is ideal for children ages 3-6 but all are welcome! \nAccessibility\nThis performance will be ASL-interpreted.
