Luy has graced stages and celebrations across the world\, performing at hundreds of weddings\, corporate galas\, cultural festivals\, parades\, Carnival events\, and community celebrations. As the founder and director of Samba Passion\, Luy has created\, staged\, and taught choreographies for dancers of all levels\, from beginners discovering samba’s rhythms to seasoned performers refining their stage presence. DESCRIPTION:Have you been mesmerized by the energy and cohesion of the carnival street percussion groups of Rio de Janeiro\, Brazil? Join this weekly Brazilian bateria class to learn the fundamentals of samba percussion technique and repertoire. A bateria is the percussion ensemble driving the groove of the whole samba band. \nEducArte’s percussion director and Rio de Janeiro native André Coelho leads the bateria classes. André has played in many carnival groups\, such as Carmelitas\, Céu na Terra\, Cacique de Ramos\, Orquestra Voadora\, Prata Preta\, and Tá Pirando. Classes are also taught by Levine faculty member Christopher Payne\, a multi-faceted drummer and percussionist who fuses ethnic hand percussion\, orchestral percussion\, and drum set to create music across a multitude of genres. \nEducArte at Levine welcomes all levels\, from beginners to advanced\, semi-professionals\, and music teachers. No auditions are required. The bateria class meets for 1.5 hours a week to work on technique and repertoire and to rehearse for group performances. Samba is an interactive experience and we invite you to join the sarau de samba. \nSet in the historic Glen Echo Park\, Sarau de Samba features a dynamic ensemble of skilled musicians and dancers\, showcasing the diverse rhythms of samba\, from Golden Age classics and choro to modern pagode and high-energy carnival beats. More than just a performance\, this event invites attendees to become part of the music\, with opportunities to dance\, sing\, and even play instruments alongside the professionals. Each session starts with a beginner dance lesson. The ensemble includes the top Brazilian musicians in the region\, including Pablo\, André\, Carlinhos Rangel\, Hugo Vásquez\,  Chris Payne\, David Sacks\, André Vidal\, and Tom Rohde. \nThere can be no samba music without samba dance! Expert samba dancer and educator Mariana Triginelli teaches attendees to move in time with fun and spirit. \nDJ Babilous is a Brazilian DJ based in Washington\, DC. She is known for highly energetic sets full of Brazilian rhythms and carnival vibes. \nSinger and poet Rose Moraes brings the soul of Brazilian Music to the world. Born in the south of Brazil near São Paulo\, she has performed in Switzerland\, Poland\, Brazil and the US\, where she now resides. She recorded a CD called “Brejeira” and launched her show “enCANTO do Poema” (enchantment of poetry)\, which has been presented in many capitals in Brazil. In the US\, she opened for Diana Ross at BET’s “Walk of Fame” in Washington\, DC. She has also performed at the Library of Congress\, The Chamber of Commerce (Brazil-USA)\, The National Zoo\, Adams Morgan Day Festival\, Artscape (Baltimore)\, NYC at Zinc Bar and The Iridium. She has also presented “Roots of Brazil” and “Tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim” at Creative Alliance in Baltimore\, as well as Viva Brasil! in past years. Rose performed for Thievery Corporation at Eighteenth Street Lounge in DC with her Band “Soul Brazil” and currently performs on Thursdays at Mercy Me in DC.

Join this weekly Brazilian bateria class to learn the fundamentals of samba percussion technique and repertoire. A bateria is the percussion ensemble driving the groove of the whole samba band. \nEducArte’s percussion director and Rio de Janeiro native André Coelho leads the bateria classes. André has played in many carnival groups\, such as Carmelitas\, Céu na Terra\, Cacique de Ramos\, Orquestra Voadora\, Prata Preta\, and Tá Pirando. Classes are also taught by Levine faculty member Christopher Payne\, a multi-faceted drummer and percussionist who fuses ethnic hand percussion\, orchestral percussion\, and drum set to create music across a multitude of genres. \nEducArte at Levine welcomes all levels\, from beginners to advanced\, semi-professionals\, and music teachers.
