We will have some percussion instruments available for participants to use\, but please bring your own instruments if you have any. \nThis is a regularly occurring Brazilian percussion ensemble practice. All levels are welcome to participate; while primarily intended for adults\, all ages are welcome. Please note that this class will be held in The Clarice’s Orchestra Room (signs will be placed around the building and parking is free in Lot 1 on Saturdays). \nRegistration for the full semester of lessons (11 total) is $90. We will learn some basic Irish dance steps and beginner-friendly group dances\, accompanied by live music by some of the region’s best Irish musicians. \nThe caller will be dancer Kate Spanos and the band will include Marty Frye (flute)\, Peter Brice (button accordion)\, Richard Osban (guitar/tenor banjo)\, and Meghan Mette (fiddle). \nThe event will be held in the Ballroom Back Room at Glen Echo Park (Spanish Ballroom Annex). DESCRIPTION:NEW VENUE: Hook Hall\, 3400 Georgia Ave NW\, Washington\, DC 20010 \nDue to circumstances outside our control\, we have moved the event from Glen Echo Park to Hook Hall in Petworth in Washington\, DC. \n\nEducArte is thrilled to welcome back the joyous energy of Rio de Janeiro carnival to the DC area! \nENGLISH\nMonobloco is a “bloco\,” or street band\, that parades during carnival in Rio de Janeiro and is also a professional touring band. The group became popular by creating powerful cover versions of Brazilian hits\, stepping outside of the samba genre. Classics by Tim Maia\, Jorge Benjor\, Alceu Valença\, and many others were transformed into samba anthems and attracted fans from a whole new generation. During the world-famous Rio de Janeiro carnival\, Monobloco has its own parade\, which today attracts over half a million people to the streets to dance and sing. The group’s popularity soon led to the creation of a professional touring band\, which has performed extensively around Brazil and internationally\, including at the London Olympics in 2012. The group has also released several live and studio albums including the 2010 release called “10\,” which was nominated for a Latin GRAMMY for Best Samba/Pagode album. \nEducArte last presented Monobloco at Glen Echo Park in June 2022. It was an exciting live performance! Experience the electric exuberance of Rio de Janeiro’s street carnival. \nPORTUGUÊS\nO show do Monobloco é uma viagem intensa pela alegria e energia do brasileiro e sua paixão pelo samba e carnaval. O grupo começou em 2000 como uma festa de samba que rapidamente ganhou popularidade ao criar versões cover poderosas de clássicos de Tim Maia\, Jorge Benjor\, Alceu Valença e muitos outros. DESCRIPTION:Join us for TWO Brazilian carnival dance classes—frevo and samba! You are welcome to come to one or both. Also stay for our bateria (samba percussion ensemble) rehearsal with André Coelho at 3PM! \nFrevo with Kate: 1-2PM\nLearn the basics of Recife’s carnival dance\, frevo! Dancer and dance scholar Kate Spanos will demonstrate and teach frevo dance using the methodology of Mexe Com Tudo (Otávio Bastos) of Recife. Learn more about frevo and Mexe Com Tudo here. \nSamba with Zezeh: 2-3PM\nLearn samba from Zezeh\, Brazilian dancer\, teacher\, choreographer\, performer\, and healer from São Paulo with a mission to bring more joy to the world through art. Zezeh will demonstrate and teach the basics of samba dance. \nThis event is open to the public. All levels are welcome to participate. While primarily intended for adults\, everyone is welcome. SUMMARY:Festival style Irish dance workshop with Kate Spanos
DESCRIPTION:Join Kate for a special community event to learn Festival style Irish step dance at District Irish Dance Academy (DIDA)!  \nIn this workshop\, we will work on some of the movements and techniques that are typical of this style’s “slow” slip jig and learn a short piece of choreography. Festival style Irish dance is from the Belfast area of Northern Ireland and was developed by Patricia Mulholland (or “Miss Mulholland”) in the 1950s to draw the focus of Irish dance away from the “pageantry” of feis style and more towards individual expression. The costumes are simpler and dancers do not wear wigs. Festival slip jigs and set dances are much slower than their feis style counterparts\, and dancers pay particular attention to expressing “light and shade” in the music. Grace\, elegance\, and control are key features of Festival style\, and one of its distinctive motifs is the “burl” or turn/spin.  \nDIDA Tappy Hour is designed with community in mind. This event is open to everyone\, including dancers from any Irish dance school or style. Footwear: Soft shoes\, socks\, or light/non-stick sneakers. \nHere is a video of Kate performing a festival slip jig at the Maryland Irish Festival in November 2022:

JP will perform classic samba and carnival songs with band members Pablo Regis\, André Coelho\, Lucas Ashby\, Filipe Brandão\, and more.\n \nBorn in Rio de Janeiro\, JP Silva is a singer\, composer\, and instrumentalist who professionally entered the world of music through choro at the Escola Portátil de Música da Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO). He has played with renowned musicians Diogo Nogeira\, Elza Soares\, Toninho Gerais\, Barbeirinho\, Marquinhos de Oswaldo Cruz\, Délcio Carvalho\, Maurício Carrilho\, Elton Medeiros\, Paulão 7 Cordas\, Ademilde Fonseca\, Velha Guarda Império Serrano\, Velha Guarda Mangueira\, Velha Guarda Portela\, Mario Broder\, Neguinho da Beija-Flor\, B Negão\, Wilson Moreira\, Wilson das Neves\, Dudu Nobre\, Fernanda Abreu\, Jorge Aragão\, and Luiz Melodia. \nJP has played the DC/Baltimore area various times in the past\, representing the genres of samba\, choro\, and MPB.
