SUMMARY:Festival style Irish dance workshop by Kate Spanos
DESCRIPTION:Join Kate for a special community event to learn Festival style Irish step dance at District Irish Dance Academy (DIDA)!  \nIn this workshop\, we will work on some of the movements and techniques that are typical of this style’s “slow” slip jig and learn a short piece of performance choreography. Festival style Irish dance is from the Belfast area of Northern Ireland and was developed by Patricia Mulholland (or “Miss Mulholland”) in the 1950s to draw the focus of Irish dance away from the “pageantry” of feis style and more towards individual expression. The costumes are simpler and dancers do not wear wigs. Festival slip jigs and set dances are much slower than their feis style counterparts\, and dancers pay particular attention to expressing “light and shade” in the music. Grace\, elegance\, and control are key features of Festival style\, and one of its distinctive motifs is the “burl” or turn/spin.  \nDIDA Tappy Hour is designed with community in mind. This event is open to everyone\, including dancers from any Irish dance school or style. Footwear: Soft shoes\, socks\, or light/non-stick sneakers.

DESCRIPTION:Learn from Brazilian samba master percussionist André Coelho from Rio de Janeiro! André will show and demonstrate each of the essential Brazilian samba percussion instruments. We will have some percussion instruments available for participants to use\, but please bring your own instruments if you have any. \nThis is a regularly occurring Brazilian percussion ensemble practice. All levels are welcome to participate; while primarily intended for adults\, all ages are welcome. \nRegistration is $80 for the full semester (September – December 2022) or $15 per drop-in. Purchase now or at the door. First-timers can participate for free! DESCRIPTION:Milton Nascimento announces farewell to the stage and promises an epic tour to honor the fans. \nWith a trajectory that includes a 60-year career and eighty years of life\, Milton Nascimento decided that the time has come to say goodbye to the stage. But for this cycle to be complete\, the artist decided to pay one last tribute to the fans with an international tour that promises to be epic: “One Final Music Session.” \n“I could never end this part of my life of so many years on the road without honoring those who have been with me all this time: the fans. And this tour was designed especially for you!” explains Milton. After forty-three albums\, five GRAMMY awards and an honorary doctorate from the Berklee School of Music in Boston\, Milton is now preparing to sing his greatest hits on a tour that will pass through Brazil\, Europe and the United States. \nAccording to Milton\, “It would be impossible to say goodbye without putting songs from all stages of my career in the repertoire\,” He adds\, “We want to provide a unique and exciting experience\, from beginning to end.” Regarding the tour’s repertoire\, Milton says that classics such as “Ponta de Areia”\, “Encontros e Despedidas\,” “Travessia\,” “Cio da Terra\,” and “Nos Bailes da Vida”\, cannot be left our from the set list. “The rest is a surprise\,” he says. \nThe tour “One Final Music Session” is directed by Augusto K. Celebrate 60 years of Bossa Nova with multi-Grammy-winning producer\, composer\, keyboardist\, and vocalist\, Sergio Mendes\, one of the most internationally successful Brazilian artists of all time. His classic song “Mas Que Nada” is the first Portuguese language song ever to hit Billboard’s US pop chart\, and he has collaborated with pop artists like Justin Timberlake\, John Legend\, and The Black Eyed Peas. \nThis concert is presented by Strathmore.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening filled with traditional Irish music and dance! \nEducArte presents its FIRST céilí at Glen Echo Park! An Irish céilí is a social gathering filled with traditional music and dance. We will learn some basic Irish dance steps and beginner friendly group dances\, accompanied by live music by some of the region’s best Irish musicians. \nThe called will be dancer Kate Spanos and the band will include Marty Frye (flute)\, David McKindley-Ward (tenor banjo)\, and Lexie Boatright (concertina)\, joined by special guest Ryan Ward (piano) from New York. We will also have a performance by the talented students of the Baltimore-Washington Academy of Irish Culture during the break. \nThe event will be held in the Bumper Car Pavilion at Glen Echo Park. The Bumper Car Pavilion is an outdoor\, covered pavilion. Tickets are $15 per person. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water.
