SUMMARY:João Bosco at Catholic University (DC)
DESCRIPTION:As part of EducArte’s first Brazilian Guitar Masters Festival\, we present Brazilian music icons and Latin GRAMMY® winners Yamandu Costa and João Bosco! Experience the exuberance\, virtuosity\, and passionate energy of Brazilian rhythms on guitar. Yamandu Costa performs on Friday\, May 31\, at Miracle Theatre in Eastern Market and João Bosco performs on Saturday\, June 1\, at Catholic University. \nAbout João Bosco: \n🇺🇸 \nJoão Bosco has been loved in his home country of Brazil for decades\, since the 60s when he first began composing and performing. In the early 90s\, Bosco mounted a major tour of the US\, and since then he has become increasingly popular internationally\, regularly performing at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival. \nDespite his growing popularity outside of his homeland\, Bosco remains thoroughly attached to Brazil to the point of never leaving it for extended periods. His music\, though rooted in Brazil’s classic samba and bossa nova traditions\, combines rock and roll\, jazz\, African sounds\, and many other global styles in an eclectic brew that is as inventive and challenging as he is. \nJoão Bosco performs with top musicians from Brazil\, including guitarist Ricardo Silveira\, Francisco “Kiko” Freitas on drums\, and Gustavo Dellagerisi on bass. \nEducArte is thrilled to present João Bosco with his quartet here in Washington\, DC\, at Catholic University’s Hartke Theatre. New York City-based Bahian singer\, percussionist\, and guitarist Nanny Assis will open the show with his trio. O cantor\, percussionista e violonista baiano Nanny Assis abre o show. \n\n  \nEvent details\n\nDate/time: Saturday\, June 1 at 8PM (venue doors open at 7PM\, theatre doors open at 7:30PM); estimated duration is 2.5 hours but is subject to artist discretion\nLocation: Hartke Theatre at Catholic University (3801 Harewood Rd NE\, Washington\, DC 20017)\nTickets: General admission – seated\, $40 advanced / $50 at the door (no refunds)\n\nChildren age two and under do not need a ticket and will be given free admission. Any children above age two need a ticket for the show (no discounts)\n\n\nParking/transportation: Transportation information to Catholic University can be found here; Catholic University is on the red line Metro (Brookland-CUA); street parking is available or use the Flowbird app to park in the McMahon Lot\nDrinks/refreshments: Drinks and light refreshments by Prime Brazil Food will be available for purchase at the venue starting at 7PM\nDonations: Bring soap and deodorant to donate to the Personal Care Foundation; see details below\n\nCo-presented with Catholic University’s Institute for Latin American and Iberian Studies (ILAIS) and Latin American Music Center (LAMC).\n \n\n\n\n\nEducArte partners with the Personal Care Foundation\nEducArte is proud to announce our partnership with the Personal Care Foundation. We will be collecting personal care products to support survivors of domestic violence at our João Bosco concert on June 1 at Catholic University. \nSupport this worthy cause by bringing and donating one or more of the following personal care items. PCF will be on site collecting soap and deodorant at the concert on June 1. \nPersonal Care Foundation is a Maryland-based 501(c)3 nonprofit that was founded by our Brazilian American friend Carol Freitas\, who\, after breaking free of an abusive relationship in 2018 and struggling to support her family\, made it her mission to provide essential hygiene products to survivors of domestic violence and to foster their physical and mental well-being. A typical PCF Care Package includes full-size items such as shampoo\, conditioner\, soap\, deodorant\, toothpaste\, toothbrush\, disinfecting wipes\, menstrual products\, and SPF50 sunscreen. \nLearn more about PCF\, its care packages\, and our friend and champion for domestic violence survivors\, Carol Freitas\, here: personalcarefoundation.org.

SUMMARY:Irish Dance with Kate Spanos
DESCRIPTION:Deepen your skills in Irish dance with Kate Spanos! Classes will focus primarily on festival style Irish dance technique\, with an emphasis on strength\, control\, musicality\, and stage presence. In a fun and non-competitive environment\, you will learn new steps and choreographies that draw from various Irish step dance styles. \nThe goal of the class series is to promote a holistic understanding of Irish dance and develop strong performers\, well-informed traditional dancers\, and inspired creators. \nThe class is geared toward intermediate/advanced Irish dancers (ages 13+) and will include both soft shoe and hard shoe dancing. If you are not sure if this level is right for you\, please talk to Kate. \nSemester registration is encouraged but drop-ins are welcome. New choreography will be introduced every 2-3 weeks. \nClass details: \n\nDates: Wednesdays\, Sep 5 – Dec 18 (15 classes; no class Nov 27)\nTime: 7:30-9 p.m.\nLocation: CityDance at Parklawn in Rockville\, MD\nCost: $320 semester registration (family discounts available; contact Kate)\, $24 drop-in\n\n\nAbout festival style:\nFestival style Irish dance is from the Belfast area of Northern Ireland. The style was innovated in the 1930s to 1950s by Patricia Mulholland\, who created an “Irish folk ballet” that focused on expressiveness and musicality in Irish dance. The style has garnered more global attention in recent years through the work of Lauren Smyth\, the first principal dancer in Riverdance to come from the festival tradition. Festival style slip jigs and set dances are much slower than their feis style counterparts\, and dancers pay particular attention to expressing “light and shade” in the music. Grace\, elegance\, and control are key features of this style.  \nOther Irish dance styles include “feis” style (e.g.\, the style promoted by organizations like An Coimisiún and An Comhdháil)\, show style (e.g.\, Riverdance)\, old style step dance\, sean nós dance\, and céilí and set dancing. \nThis class is focused on festival style technique—a style that rarely taught in the United States—but we will take inspiration from various styles to develop a holistic understanding of Irish dance as a rich and multifaceted genre. \nAbout the instructor:\nKate Spanos is a dancer and dance scholar from the DC area with a Ph.D. in dance and performance studies from the University of Maryland and an M.A. in traditional Irish dance performance from the University of Limerick. She has been teaching Irish dance since 1999. She started dancing in 1990 with Laureen O’Neill-James\, ACDRG\, and had a successful competitive career that led her to the World Championships in 2000. She learned to teach under the mentorship of Carmel O’Rourke-Tighe\, ACDRG\, and Maria Oliver\, TCRG. She currently studies festival style with Lauren Smyth from County Down through the Lauren Smyth Academy. For more about Kate\, visit www.thekatespanos.com. \nAbout the program:\nThe Kate Spanos Irish Dance program is for dancers interested in exploring the diversity of Irish dance\, beyond just the competition world\, to gain a holistic understanding of the genre. Classes are strongly rooted in traditional Irish dance techniques but also encourage dancers to develop their own voices as performers and creators. The program emphasizes playfulness while taking seriously the Irish dance tradition and its history. The program is informed by inspirational dancing masters who made significant contributions to the genre from inside and outside of Irish dance’s larger governing bodies (e.g.\, An Coimisiún) over the past century. \nThe program aims to build a community of performers and includes preparation to participate in a robust performance schedule for dancers who are interested.
