Also\, stay for our bateria (samba percussion ensemble) rehearsal with André Coelho at 3PM! This event is open to the public. All levels are welcome to participate. \nFrevo with Kate: 1-2PM\nLearn the basics of Recife’s carnival dance\, frevo! Dancer and dance scholar Kate Spanos will demonstrate and teach frevo dance using the methodology of Mexe Com Tudo (Otávio Bastos) of Recife. Learn more about frevo and Mexe Com Tudo here. \nSamba with Ilheuma Zezeh: 2-3PM\nLearn samba from Ilheuma Zezeh\, Brazilian dancer\, teacher\, choreographer\, performer\, and healer from São Paulo with a mission to bring more joy to the world through art. Ilheuma will demonstrate and teach the basics of samba dance. \nRegistration for the full semester of lessons (9 total) is $120. Duo Choro Brazil enchants audiences with talent\, swing\, and virtuous improvisation! \nIuri Bittar \nIuri Bittar is a guitarist\, composer\, music producer\, and teacher. Originally from the city of Franca in São Paulo’s interior\, he has dedicated himself to playing the guitar for 20 years\, specializing in the Brazilian genres of choro and samba. He moved to Rio de Janeiro in 2008\, where\, for more than 10 years\, he has been on the faculty of the Escola Portátil de Música and the Instituto Casa do Choro\, two internationally renowned centers for teaching and researching choro music. As an academic researcher\, his pioneering Master’s thesis about guitarist Jayme Florence (also known as “O Meira”) has made him an important reference in the historical and musicological study of Brazilian guitar. In his 20 years as a guitarist\, Iuri has participated in various choro and samba groups\, sharing the stage with some of the biggest names in Brazilian music. \nAlmir Côrtes \nA native of Bahia\, Brazil\, versatile multi-instrumentalist Almir Côrtes is equally at home on mandolin\, acoustic and electric guitars\, Viola Caipira (Brazilian ten-string guitar) and the rarely-seen Bahian guitar. His repertoire of styles is equally broad and includes choro\, frevo\, samba\, baião\, bossa nova\, and Brazilian jazz. Equally in demand as a teacher and scholar\, Almir is currently a professor at the University of Rio de Janeiro’s Villa-Lobos Institute – where he conducts the Orchestra of Plucked Strings and the web series Villa de Sons. \nAs a leader of his own groups\, which feature many of his original compositions\, he seeks to expand the boundaries of traditional Brazilian musical styles through experimentation and improvisation. He has performed throughout Brazil as well as the United States\, Europe and Cuba.

DESCRIPTION:Educarte Joins College Park’s Trolley Trail Day \nOur regular Brazilian Carnival dance class and Bateria drumming class at the Old Parish House will be a stop on the Trolley Trail. Participants can stop in and join us! \nThe Trolley Trail is a 3.5-mile-long trail that is a recreational and transportation asset. By linking the downtowns and commercial areas of the three Baltimore Avenue Corridor communities\, the Trolley Trail serves as a convenient connection between our communities. It also connects into the larger region’s trail network\, linking us with the District of Columbia and other jurisdictions. As in 2019\, community development groups the College Park City-University Partnership\, Hyattsville CDC\, and Maryland Milestones now known as Anacostia Trails Heritage Area Inc. (ATHA)\, local governments\, and nonprofit organizations are holding the second annual Trolley Trail Day on June 10\, 2023. The first annual Trolley Trail Day had over 800 people and over 40 businesses participating. SUMMARY:Brazilian Bateria Class
DESCRIPTION:Learn from Brazilian samba master percussionist André Coelho from Rio de Janeiro! André will demonstrate and teach each of the essential Brazilian samba percussion instruments. We will have some percussion instruments available for participants to use\, but please bring your own instruments if you have any. \nThis is a regularly occurring Brazilian percussion ensemble practice. All levels are welcome to participate; while primarily intended for adults\, all ages are welcome. \nRegistration for the full semester of lessons (11 total) is $90. Scholarships are available to those for whom cost is prohibitive (contact us for more information). \n$15 drop-ins are also available. \n\nThe event is a program of College Park-based arts non-profit EducArte. Special thanks to our event sponsor\, the College Park Arts Exchange. \nThanks also to our instrument sponsor\, Contemporânea. EducArte exclusively uses Contemporânea instruments at our Brazilian percussion events.
