SUMMARY:Festival Style Irish Dance at Celtic Festival of Southern Maryland
DESCRIPTION:Dancer and scholar Kate Spanos will demonstrate the festival style of Irish dance at the Celtic Festival of Southern Maryland this year. Festival style Irish dance is a form associated with Northern Ireland that is distinct from the “feis” style step dancing that emerged in the mid-twentieth century. The style was pioneered by Patricia Mulholland\, a fiddler and dancer\, who created a “folk ballet” in the 1930-1950s to appeal to both Catholics and Protestants in the Belfast area. Influenced by Scottish and Irish step dancing\, festival style is known for its slow\, elegant\, and controlled slip jigs and set dances. Creating “light and shade” in one’s dancing is an important aspect of the style\, with graceful leg lifts\, swoops\, and spins. Drawing on her studies with Ruth Long and Lauren Smyth in the festival style tradition\, Kate will present a showcase of traditional and modern soft shoe and hard shoe dances in this style.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for TWO Brazilian carnival dance classes—frevo and samba! You are welcome to come to one or both. Also stay for our bateria (samba percussion ensemble) rehearsal with André Coelho at 3PM! \nFrevo with Kate: 1-2PM\nLearn the basics of Recife’s carnival dance\, frevo! Dancer and dance scholar Kate Spanos will demonstrate and teach frevo dance using the methodology of Mexe Com Tudo (Otávio Bastos) of Recife. Learn more about frevo and Mexe Com Tudo here. \nSamba with Ilheuma Zezeh: 2-3PM\nLearn samba from Ilheuma Zezeh\, Brazilian dancer\, teacher\, choreographer\, performer\, and healer from São Paulo with a mission to bring more joy to the world through art. Ilheuma will demonstrate and teach the basics of samba dance. \nThis event is open to the public. All levels are welcome to participate. While primarily intended for adults\, everyone is welcome. Please note that this class will be held at Old Parish House of College Park at 4711 Knox Road. \nRegistration for the full semester of lessons (11 total) is $90. Scholarships are available to those for whom cost is prohibitive (contact us for more information). \n$15 drop-ins are also available.

DESCRIPTION:Learn from Brazilian samba master percussionist André Coelho from Rio de Janeiro! André will demonstrate and teach each of the essential Brazilian samba percussion instruments. We will have some percussion instruments available for participants to use\, but please bring your own instruments if you have any. \nThis is a regularly occurring Brazilian percussion ensemble practice. All levels are welcome to participate; while primarily intended for adults\, all ages are welcome. Please note that this class will be held in The Clarice’s Orchestra Room (signs will be placed around the building and parking is free in Lot 1 on Saturdays). \nRegistration for the full semester of lessons (11 total) is $90. Scholarships are available to those for whom cost is prohibitive (contact us for more information). \n$15 drop-ins are also available. \n\nThe event is a program of College Park-based arts non-profit EducArte.
