SUMMARY:Workshop: An Overview of Philippine Native Music with Bo Razón
DESCRIPTION:Bo Razón\, photo by Judy Razón\nThis presentation will cover pre-colonial music roots from two Philippine ethnolinguistic regions which have now become the main sources for Filipino world music. Various ethnic instruments and rhythms from both the Northern & Southern tribes will be demonstrated. The focus will be on bamboo and gong instruments as well as the native boat lutes. The workshop will also examine the Hispanic influence in Philippine music from over three centuries of colonization. Various stringed instruments like the Philippine Banduria & Laúd will be featured as well. \nAbout Bo Razón:\nBo Razón is a multi-instrumentalist\, composer\, recording artist\, and educator. His influences are mainly native music from North & Sub-Saharan Africa\, Cuba\, Southeast Asia\, Brazil\, the Caribbean\, North America\, the Iberian peninsula\, and the Middle East. Passionate about traditional music of indigenous world cultures as well as contemporary music genres\, he seeks ways in which the two may coalesce organically. His skill sets have brought him to work in a musical capacity with several global institutions of art and culture such as the British Council\, the Goethe Institut\, the Alliance Francaise\, Instituto Cervantes\, and the Philippine National Commission for Culture & the Arts. He has taught World & Afro-Latin music at the University of the Philippines\, as well as teaching music to K-12 school kids in California. Bo plays several stringed and skinned (percussion) instruments from diverse global cultures and has performed with many major artists from around the world in many settings and venues in Asia\, Europe\, and the Americas.

SUMMARY:Slow slip jig - Festival style Irish dance workshop with Kate Spanos
DESCRIPTION:Note: This workshop will take place in Boston\, MA. \nJoin us for a special workshop in Festival style Irish step dance! We will work on some of the movements and techniques that are typical of this style’s “slow” slip jig and learn a short piece of choreography. \nFestival style Irish dance is from the Belfast area of Northern Ireland and was developed by Patricia Mulholland (or “Miss Mulholland”) in the 1950s to draw the focus of Irish dance away from the “pageantry” of feis style and more towards individuality. The costumes are simpler and dancers do not wear wigs; their slip jigs and set dances are much slower than their feis style counterparts\, and dancers pay particular attention to the “light/shade” parts of the music. Grace\, elegance\, and control are key features of Festival style\, and one of its distinctive motifs is the “burl” or turn/spin. \nKate Spanos is a dancer and dance scholar from Washington\, DC with a PhD in Dance and Performance Studies from the University of Maryland and an MA in Traditional Irish Dance Performance from the University of Limerick. She learned Festival style from Ruth Long of the Royal Tara Dance Academy in Carrickfergus and Larne while studying at UL. Throughout the pandemic\, she participated in virtual study of Festival style with Lauren Smyth from County Down (@laurensmythacademy). For more about Kate\, visit www.thekatespanos.com. \nAttire: Soft shoes\, socks\, or light/non-stick sneakers \nFor more about Festival style\, check out Angeline King’s “Irish Dancing: The Festival Story.” \nRegister online \nKate dancing “Aoibhell: The Faerie Queene” set dance (choreographed by Ruth Long\, composed by Francis Ward):
