DESCRIPTION:Learn frevo\, a high energy Brazilian carnival dance from northeastern Brazil! Kate Spanos of Mexe Com Tudo will teach you some basic frevo steps\, with a focus on joyous self-expression. Wear comfortable shoes. All are welcome! The movement will be accessible and adaptable to all abilities. \nMexe Com Tudo is a carnival group in Recife\, Brazil founded by Otávio Bastos and Marília Cavalcanti. Mexe Com Tudo offers frevo dance classes to students and student-teachers in Recife and abroad (via Zoom) that focus on freedom of expression\, improvisational strategies and the cultural history of frevo. Mexe Com Tudo also has an award-winning YouTube channel dedicated to all things frevo at www.youtube.com/mexecomtudo. \nThis workshop is part of On Deck: Women Shredding Through Boundaries at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage (outside at the Reach Plaza). SUMMARY:EducArte’s Brazilian Percussion Workshop & Jam
DESCRIPTION:This event is free and open to the public. While primarily intended for adults\, everyone is welcome. It will be held at the Old Parish House of College Park at 4711 Knox Road. \nLearn from and jam with Brazilian samba master percussionist André Coelho from Rio de Janeiro. André will show and demonstrate each of the essential Brazilian percussion instruments. Participants will learn basic rhythms and the event will finish with a jam session. \nWe will have some percussion instruments\, like pandeiros\, tamborins\, and surdos for participants. But please bring your instrument if you have one. \nThis is a regularly occurring Brazilian percussion meetup to create a new community ensemble. All levels are welcome to participate. \nThe event is a program of College Park-based arts non-profit EducArte.
