Learn more about frevo and Mexe Com Tudo here. \nSamba with Ilheuma Zezeh: 2-3PM\nLearn samba from Ilheuma Zezeh\, Brazilian dancer\, teacher\, choreographer\, performer\, and healer from São Paulo with a mission to bring more joy to the world through art. Ilheuma will demonstrate and teach the basics of samba dance. \nThis event is open to the public. All levels are welcome to participate. While primarily intended for adults\, everyone is welcome. DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate St. Patrick’s month at an Irish social gathering filled with traditional music and dance! We will learn some basic Irish dance steps and beginner-friendly group dances\, accompanied by live music by some of the region’s best Irish musicians. \nThe caller will be dancer Kate Spanos and the band will include Marty Frye (flute)\, Peter Brice (button accordion)\, Richard Osban (guitar/tenor banjo)\, and Meghan Mette (fiddle). \nThe event will be held in the Ballroom Back Room at Glen Echo Park (Spanish Ballroom Annex). Wear comfortable shoes and bring water. DESCRIPTION:NEW VENUE: Hook Hall\, 3400 Georgia Ave NW\, Washington\, DC 20010 \nDue to circumstances outside our control\, we have moved the event from Glen Echo Park to Hook Hall in Petworth in Washington\, DC. \n\nEducArte is thrilled to welcome back the joyous energy of Rio de Janeiro carnival to the DC area! \nENGLISH\nMonobloco is a “bloco\,” or street band\, that parades during carnival in Rio de Janeiro and is also a professional touring band. The group became popular by creating powerful cover versions of Brazilian hits\, stepping outside of the samba genre. Classics by Tim Maia\, Jorge Benjor\, Alceu Valença\, and many others were transformed into samba anthems and attracted fans from a whole new generation. During the world-famous Rio de Janeiro carnival\, Monobloco has its own parade\, which today attracts over half a million people to the streets to dance and sing. The group’s popularity soon led to the creation of a professional touring band\, which has performed extensively around Brazil and internationally\, including at the London Olympics in 2012. The group has also released several live and studio albums including the 2010 release called “10\,” which was nominated for a Latin GRAMMY for Best Samba/Pagode album. \nEducArte last presented Monobloco at Glen Echo Park in June 2022. It was an exciting live performance! They are a charismatic and talented duo performing a fusion of Venezuelan and Appalachian folk music\, and their act is entirely bilingual! \nLarry Bellorín hails from Monagas\, Venezuela\, and is a legend of Llanera music. Joe Troop is from North Carolina and is a GRAMMY-nominated bluegrass and old-time musician. Larry was forced into exile and is an asylum seeker in North Carolina. After a decade in South America\, Joe got stranded back in his stomping grounds during the pandemic. Larry works construction to make ends meet. Joe’s acclaimed “latingrass” band Che Apalache was forced into hiatus\, and he shifted into action working with asylum-seeking migrants. \nCurrently based in the Triangle of North Carolina\, both men are versatile multi-instrumentalists and singer-songwriters on a mission to show that music has no borders. As a duo\, they perform a fusion of Venezuelan and Appalachian folk music on the harp\, banjo\, cuatro\, fiddle\, maracas\, guitar\, upright bass\, and whatever else they decide to throw in the van. Dancer and dance scholar Kate Spanos will demonstrate and teach frevo dance using the methodology of Mexe Com Tudo (Otávio Bastos) of Recife. Learn more about frevo and Mexe Com Tudo here. \nSamba with Zezeh: 2-3PM\nLearn samba from Zezeh\, Brazilian dancer\, teacher\, choreographer\, performer\, and healer from São Paulo with a mission to bring more joy to the world through art. Zezeh will demonstrate and teach the basics of samba dance. \nThis event is free and open to the public. All levels are welcome to participate. While primarily intended for adults\, everyone is welcome. Please note that this class will be held at Old Parish House of College Park at 4711 Knox Road. \nThe event is a program of College Park-based arts non-profit EducArte.
