In this weekly session\, you will learn the high-energy samba percussion rhythms that drive Rio-style street parades\, with a focus on solid technique\, ensemble playing\, and musicality. \nClasses meet at Levine Music’s Silver Spring campus (900 Wayne Ave\, 2nd floor\, Silver Spring\, MD 20910) on the following dates: \n\nThursday\, July 2\nThursday\, July 9\nWednesday\, July 15\nWednesday\, July 22\nThursday\, July 30\n\nAll classes run from 6:30-8:00 p.m. All sessions are drop-in at a $25 rate\, giving you flexibility to join when you can while still experiencing the energy of a live samba ensemble. \nYou’ll get hands-on experience with key bateria instruments such as surdo\, caixa\, tamborim\, repique\, and more\, rotating through different parts of the ensemble as you build confidence in timing\, feel\, and coordination. All instruments are provided\, so you can simply show up\, explore\, and play—no need to bring your own gear. \nThis class is designed for adult learners of all backgrounds: complete beginners\, hobbyists\, seasoned musicians\, semi-professionals\, and music educators looking to expand their rhythmic toolkit. No experience is necessary\, and our instructors will meet you where you are\, balancing clear\, structured instruction with the fun and energy of group music-making. SUMMARY:Levine Presents | Brazilian Choro: The Musical World of Pixinguinha
DESCRIPTION:Explore the imaginative and intriguing melodies of Brazilian choro with an evening celebrating the genre’s most influential composer\, Alfredo da Rocha Viana Filho\, also known as Pixinguinha. Alongside a remarkable guest ensemble\, faculty member Ceylon Mitchell guides us through this Afro-Brazilian genre as we sample some of the most famous choros composed by Pixinguinha and his contemporaries. \nAbout Brazilian Choro\nChoro emerged as a distinct musical genre around the middle of the 19th Century in Rio de Janeiro as a blend of Afrodiasporic and European musical styles in newly independent Brazil. Syncopated rhythms from Africa and popular dance forms from Europe (the polka\, habanera\, and more) melded together to create a unique new style\, which often gives the lead and highly ornamented melody to the flute\, harmonically supported by guitar and cavaquinho. Percussive accompaniment often comes from the pandeiro\, a Brazilian frame drum similar to a tambourine.
