EducArte presents Ilê Aiyê in Washington, DC

On Friday, September 5, Ilê Aiyê took the stage at UDC Theater of the Arts for a concert that brought powerful samba-afro rhythms and Afro-Brazilian dance to DC, along with a message of pride and resistance. Founded in Salvador, Bahia in 1974, Ilê Aiyê is not only a legendary musical group but also an important force in Brazil’s Black consciousness movement, using music and performance to celebrate African heritage and challenge social exclusion.

It was a deep pleasure to present Ilê Aiyê in Washington DC earlier this month. EducArte works to bring important Brazilian artists to our local audiences. One of our missions is to expand the market for Brazilian artists. Ilê Aiyê is of great importance in Brazil’s musical scene and in the Black consciousness movement, and we are proud to share their work with more people.

The concert at UDC was a rare opportunity for the DC community to connect with Ilê Aiyê’s rich tradition of percussion, music, and dance. The night invited attendees to experience rhythms and stories that span continents, bridging Salvador and DC through art and axé.

Thank you to the Embassy of Brazil in Washington, DC, Instituto Guimarães Rosa, Batalá DC, and Chuck Levins for their support.
