Last week, we wrapped up our Summer Samba Challenge! Congratulations to everyone who participated. It was a fantastic month of weekly sessions, including: a short workout to prepare our bodies to dance, intensive samba technique, and a Brazilian dance taster series. The taster series included capoeira, axé from Bahia, frevo from Recife, and toada from Parintins. Everyone had a great time delving deeper into their samba and also learning more about what other dances and rhythms Brazil has to offer.
We are excited to announce that registration is now open for all of our fall classes! That includes our samba bateria classes with André Coelho and now TWO samba dance classes! Amina Malik will teach on Tuesdays in Rockville, and Mariana Triginelli on Thursdays in Downtown Silver Spring. Bateria and dance classes start the week of September 8.
The next session of our Brazilian Arts Academy also starts later in the month on September 27. We are excited to continue our partnership with Montgomery College in Rockville to offer this program to Brazilian and Brazilian-American families in Montgomery County and throughout the DC region. If you have any questions about the program, please contact us.
Our next Sarau de Samba is also coming up on September 7—and if you know, you know! September 7 is Brazilian Independence Day 🇧🇷 To commemorate this special event, we have received a generous grant from the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center to make this sarau FREE for everyone! We highly recommend that you register ahead of time to guarantee your spot. Join us for an afternoon of samba at Glen Echo Park—singing, dancing, food, drinks, friends, and community!
And last but not least, we cannot wait to present the legendary Afro-Bahian bloco Ilê Aiyê on September 5 at UDC Theater of the Arts! This is going to be an incredible concert with the iconic group from Brazil. Get your tickets now!
