Last month, we proudly launched our Brazilian Arts Academy at the Rockville campus of Montgomery College, bringing the vibrant spirit of Brazilian music and culture to local youth and families. Under the guidance of our expert instructors Carlinhos Rangel, Carol Freitas, and Pablo de Oliveira, students dove into the world of samba rhythms, exploring instruments like shakers, tan-tan, tamborim, pandeiro, and even a bit of guitar.
Sessions were filled with energy and discovery as students learned the basics of samba and connected with Brazilian heritage through hands-on music-making. Adding to the excitement, students were invited to a special event with the legendary samba group Fundo de Quintal—a unique opportunity to engage with the roots of this beloved genre.
Registration is now open for the upcoming session of the Brazilian Arts Academy, running from April 26 through June 7. Classes are held weekly on Saturdays at the Montgomery College Rockville campus and are designed for students ages 6 to 13. The program is taught in Portuguese Heritage Language and offers a welcoming space for Brazilian and Brazilian-American youth to learn music, practice Portuguese, and celebrate their culture together.
