🇧🇷 Brazilian Dance & Percussion

Join us for our Brazilian carnival dance (frevo and samba) and bateria (samba percussion ensemble) classes on Saturdays! These events are open to the public. All levels are welcome to participate.

Frevo with Kate: 1-2PM

Learn the basics of Recife’s carnival dance, frevo! Dancer and dance scholar Kate Spanos will demonstrate and teach frevo dance using the methodology of Mexe Com Tudo (Otávio Bastos) of Recife. Learn more about frevo and Mexe Com Tudo here.

Samba with Ilheuma Zezeh: 2-3PM

Learn samba from Ilheuma Zezeh, Brazilian dancer, teacher, choreographer, performer, and healer from São Paulo with a mission to bring more joy to the world through art. Ilheuma will demonstrate and teach the basics of samba dance.

Bateria Drumming with André and Filipe: 3-430PM

Learn from Brazilian samba master percussionist André Coelho from Rio de Janeiro! André will demonstrate and teach each of the essential Brazilian samba percussion instruments. We will have some percussion instruments available for participants to use, but please bring your own instruments if you have any. Music instructor Filipe Brandão provides instruction geared towards children. Note: Children must be accompanied by an adult at these sessions. No drop-offs allowed. Recommended for children ages 6 and up.

Location

We regularly meet at the Old Parish House, at 4711 Knox Road in College Park (the alternate location is St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church at 4512 College Avenue in College Park), thanks to our partnership with the College Park Arts Exchange.

Registration for the full semester of lessons (9 total) is $120. Scholarships are available to those for whom cost is prohibitive (contact us for more information).

$20 drop-ins are also available.
